Dear praying friends,
….. for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable (Romans 11:29)
Rev. Keith Parker once wrote his definition of the Church:
It is the most successful Jewish business. The chairman of the board was and is Jewish. All the original board members were Jewish as well. Its purpose was to take the good news of the Messiah of Israel to the ends of the earth. So successful has the business been that even the Jews think that it is Gentile.
I was really amused when I first read this. From the bottom of my heart I sincerely hope that my Jewish friends will come to realise that Jesus is one of them, their Messiah from the beginning.??
Praise the Lord our Passover outreach on 12th April went very well. Thanks to your prayers, the panel discussion went smoothly and the message was well received. Alex Cowie chaired the meeting successfully (we have discovered another David Dimbleby!). My Jewish friend Dee and her daughter Eva both enjoyed the event and have said that they would come to our October meeting.
I must say that I really experienced strong spiritual warfare as we organised the event. Firstly, Ray and Nel McCabe were unwell and were not able to meet Dee and Eva; then one of our musicians took ill the day before the outreach. Also, to my great surprise, my Israeli friend Tali phoned and said, “I am Jewish and I am not coming to your Christian meeting. Do not send me fliers in future.” Just two days before this, Tali had said that she would bring along a salmon dish and had sounded very cheerful. I still do not know why she suddenly changed her mind, although she knew very well beforehand that she was coming to a place where she would hear a message concerning Jesus the Messiah. I was really stunned when she made her comment. I do not know what stirred her up. Please pray that Tali will surrender completely to the Lord.
Despite all the dis-appointments, the Lord was merciful in that Dee and Eva appeared at the meeting. Joseph, who is a Hebrew Christian, had a long chat with Dee. He told her about the definition of grace: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense and asked me to give Dee a booklet Messiah: Five Jewish people make the greatest discovery, which includes Helen Shapiro’s testimony. Dee said she would read it. She told me that Joseph was the first Hebrew Christian she had ever met! Please pray that the Lord will continue to open Dee and Eva’s hearts.
Through Dee, I joined a women’s group, called WA, through which I have met quite a few Jewish ladies. The WA meets bimonthly and we often have interesting discussions. A Jewish lady at our last meeting told me that her grandson was studying Mandarin in Beijing and was going to be involved in diplomatic service. Please pray for opportunities to share the gospel with this group.?
I met Lee, the cousin of my Jewish friend Dawn, at a Chinese New Year party. Until recently she was involved in producing TV soap operas, such as River City, but she has now gone into the film industry. She went to China for three weeks and was fascinated by the Beijing Chinese Opera, so she asked me whether there was a Chinese opera group in Glasgow. Interestingly, I knew of a Cantonese opera group, run by some members of the Glasgow Chinese Christian Church, and Lee is looking forward to attending their opera in July. Please pray for the development of our friendship and opportunities to share my faith with her.
Sometimes I feel I am a bit like the fire brigade. Several phone calls I made recently were crucial to two of my Jewish friends. Each told me that they were at a critical point in their life when I phoned. Please pray that I would be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
A journalist is writing the biography of my friend’s father, a Holocaust survivor who passed through six concentration camps. The story is an extraordinary one but my friend will need to be interviewed by the author several times even though it will be agony for him to remember his father’s trauma once again. He will also have to proofread the article. I encouraged him to go for counselling, as he has recently discovered more disturbing information and evidence regarding the concentration camps; this may prolong the completion of the book, as well as the agony he will have to go through. I encouraged my friend by saying that through writing about his father, and other victims, he would leave footprints in history. Although thinking about the horrors his father suffered is proving very painful for him, it will be worth it. Please remember my friend and his family and pray that he will have the strength to finish the book.
You might remember Gina who went with me to a church near where she lives. Recently, I went to visit her and it happened to be her birthday. I was really pleased to be able to spend time with her that day. She gave me two books about Hebrew and the Bible and I passed on to her a book entitled Jesus was a Jew. Please pray that she will read it and will recognise Jesus Christ as her Messiah, her hope and glory.
My elocution teacher, Alon, told me that he prays to Jesus Christ but I do not think his understanding is biblical. He has two small Buddhas at home. Please pray that I will be able to help him to understand what the Bible says about Jesus.
In my previous letter I mentioned Hilda, who is in the Jewish Choral Society. When we met for a practice she sat beside me. She had an extra concert ticket to the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra and invited me to go with her. We shared life stories with each other that evening. She told me about the moments of glory in her career. I am glad that we are getting to know each other better. She speaks Modern Hebrew and has just started a painting class. Therefore I can practice my Modern Hebrew with her and discuss painting skills as well. Please pray for opportunities to share the Gospel with her. I am very pleased to notice that both a member from my church and a Hebrew Christian have joined our singing group this year!
Sincere thanks to you all for your prayers and support
In His service,
